COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course introduces the student to descriptive statistics, probability and inferential statistical methods. Topics include probability distribution, sampling techniques, measures of central tendency and dispersion, correlation, regression, hypothesis testing and statistical inference. Prerequisite: Intermediate Algebra
LEARNING OUTCOMES
The student will:
- Be able to tell the difference between samples and populations.
- Form frequency distributions and histograms from a set of raw data.
- Calculate the measures of central tendency: mean, median, and mode.
- Find the measures of dispersion: range, variance, and standard deviation.
- Understand and be able to use the rules of probability and probability distributions.
- Understand and use the binomial and normal distributions.
- Calculate and understand point estimates and interval estimates for known and unknown variables.
- Use the chi-square distribution and tables.
- Use linear regression and correlation to infer conclusions.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING YOUR WORK
- All assigned homework should be submitted using the Digital Drop Box. All assignments are due at 11:59 pm on the due date.
- All documents you submit must have your name on the document and on the file name.
- Graphs on projects must be included within your word document. They cannot be submitted as separate attachments.
- You are responsible for getting assignments in on time. If you wait until too late to start the assignment and have technical problems or cannot finish on time, you will be assessed the late penalty noted above. Technical problems are no excuse for late assignments: contact the WAOL help desk or me immediately.
- Please give me at least 48 hours to respond to your submitted work.
- One week with no logons or submission of assignments will result in an automatic F for the course.
- Plagiarism will result in an automatic F for the course.
- Quizzes and Exams are delivered online.
- Quizzes and Exams are open book, open notes, and Excel may be used.
- Final Exam must be completed at a college campus or library and supervised by a proctor.
GUIDELINES FOR CLASS COMMUNICATION
- For questions about the course material, please post your questions to the appropriate discussion board. This will give your classmates an opportunity to learn from your questions or share their own personal knowledge. If you do not receive an answer to your question, I will step in and respond to your post.
- Every time you log on, make sure you read everything that is new, everywhere in the various forums of the discussion area. Even if it doesn’t have a heading that makes it look earth-shatteringly important, a message might tell you precisely the thing you were wondering about.
- If you have a question that other students would not benefit from hearing the answer to or if you feel you need to be private about your question, go ahead and send me an email. I will try to respond to all emails within 24 hours. (Angel provides an email service through the communication link.)
- Students who demonstrate a disregard for working, learning, adult behavior, appropriate use of language, or respect for others’ ideas may be asked to leave the class.
